The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
