During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
